A Legacy Rooted In Druid Hills

Nestled in the heart of historic Druid Hills, the Briarcliff Estate stands as a symbol of Atlanta’s grandeur in the early 20th century. Originally built in the 1920s by Asa G. Candler Jr., the son of Coca-Cola co-founder Asa Candler Sr., the estate was once among the most lavish private residences in the Southeast. At its height, the mansion was known for its opulent ballrooms, sweeping grounds, and storied guest lists, hosting dignitaries and community leaders within its stately finishes.

Early Enterprises

Over the years, Asa launched numerous ventures on his estate. Among them were a dairy farm, laundry, and a grand zoo. This menagerie grew so large, in fact, that he eventually donated his animals to the Grant Park Zoo, now Zoo Atlanta, marking one of the most significant contributions in the Atlanta icon’s history.

Contemporary History

In the 1960’s, after being sold to the federal government, the estate became a hub of healthcare and wellness initiatives. Local and federal programs were hosted in a new health institute established on the property, supported in part by a collaboration with Emory University’s School of Medicine.

In the 1990s, Emory University acquired the estate. For a time, the property was used for academic and continuing education pursuits, but the site proved to be too costly to maintain.

Return To Glory

Alongside our private residences, we will be restoring the historic Candler Mansion to its former glory. The mansion will serve as an event space for local neighborhoods and an amenity to our residents and guests.

The mansion will also feature renovated greenhouses and gardens alongside extensive walking paths to encompass the grand campus.
